Joe Knowles has been the associate managing editor for sports since May 2014. Previously, Knowles was associate managing editor for editing and presentation, supervising the copy desk, page designers and graphics staff.

Knowles has also served as the Tribune’s design and graphics editor and was a founding co-editor of RedEye, the Tribune’s weekly entertainment tabloid.

This is Knowles’ second stint in the sports department; he was a sports news editor during the Bulls’ six championship runs in the 1990s and the Tribune’s bureau chief for the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

Born on Chicago’s West Side, he attended the University of Illinois-Chicago as an English major.
