Route 41 remained closed between Route 60 and Westleigh Road in Lake Forest as of 6 p.m. Wednesday after gravel began falling from a train bridge trestle, according to Lake Forest Police.
Contractors were doing work on the railroad bed on the bridge at about 10:30 a.m., Lake Forest Deputy Chief Rob Copeland said.
“They created a situation where gravel was falling over the side of the bridge or through gaps in the bridge,” Copeland said. “When trains went over it, the trestle would shake and more gravel would fall. We shut it down once, and then IDOT and Union Pacific inspected it and thought it was fine. We opened the road up about 1 p.m. and it started happening again.”
Copeland added that police had received four reports of gravel falling on car windshields and cracking them.
Copeland said he expected a crew from Union Pacific would be there to clean gravel off the trestle by 7 or 7:30 p.m.
