The Hampshire Fire Department responded to a crash involving two vehicles on Route 72 west of Brier Hill Road at 10:14 a.m. on Sunday.

“Two patients were transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin with injuries that were not life-threatening,” said Hampshire Deputy Fire Chief Trevor Herrmann.

Improving the safety of the intersection of Route 72 and Brier Hill Road has recently been brought up by state and local officials.

A special meeting in January about the intersection was attended by State Rep. Steven Andersson, two Illinois Department of Transportation officials, Hampshire Village President Jeffrey Magnussen, Trustee Mike Reid, Hampshire Police Chief Brian Thompson, Herrmann, Hampshire Township Supervisor Jody Remakel and Hampshire Township Highway Commissioner Stan Walker.

Reid said IDOT has committed to the village’s request for a traffic study on Illinois 72 from French Road and an extended distance to Brier Hill Road.

Since the meeting, flashing amber lights were added to signs on Illinois 72 in both directions to warn drivers of the upcoming intersection.
