After being a backup for the last three seasons with the Blackhawks, Scott Darling is cashing in — and in a big way.
Darling signed a four-year deal with the Hurricanes worth an average of $4.15 million per season, the team announced Friday.
By comparison, Darling made $1.175 million combined the last two seasons for the Hawks.
Darling’s new contract comes a week after the Hawks traded Darling’s rights to the Hurricanes for a third-round pick. Darling was set to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1. But the Hurricanes badly wanted Darling to be their starting goaltender and were aggressive in getting him from the Hawks and inking the new deal.
He filled in capably over the last three seasons for starting goaltender Corey Crawford. Over 75 career games, including 64 starts, Darling had a save percentage of .923 and a 2.37 goals-against average. Darling was 18-5-5 this season for the Hawks and filled in for Crawford in December when Crawford missed nine consecutive games after undergoing an appendectomy. Darling’s .924 save percentage this season was fifth among all goaltenders who played at least 30 games this season. His 2.38 GAA was 10th.
