James Ely, operator of Buckingham Fountain, fills an oil reservoir May 18, 1945, on a giant 250 horsepower motor, which pulls one of two pumps. The pumps are capable of an output of 15,000 gallons of water per minute. Engineers tested the fountain in preparation for that Sunday’s opening.

Performers Lorraine DeChant, Miriam Henry, Mary DeChant, Joan Griffin, Eleanor Shettler, Katherine Nassem and Lillian Dean rehearse for the Fountain Dance Pageant at Buckingham Fountain. More than 300 girls and young women rehearsed July 15, 1936, for the pageant. The “Enchanted Fountain” performance would take place two days later for three nights, a symphony of dance and colored lights in which the girls actually danced in the fountain basin and at the base of the structure. Much of the dance took place in the water jet area with performers wearing silk, rubber and cellophane waterproof costumes.
