Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey, a college roommate, teammate and good friend of ex-New England tight end Aaron Hernandez, posted an Instagram message Wednesday about Hernandez, who prison officials said hung himself inside his jail cell in Massachusetts.
“To my friend my brother! Through thick and thin right or wrong we never left each other’s side. Today my heart hurts as I got the worse news I could have imagined. It was just a day ago we shared our last convo. I will forever miss you and love you bro. we will meet again rest easy!,” Pouncey wrote on Instagram.
Hernandez, who played for the Florida Gators with Pouncey, was serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd. Hernandez was acquitted of a double murder last week. Hernandez was found dead inside his single-occupancy cell Wednesday morning.
Pouncey and his twin brother Maurkice, a center for the Pittsburgh Steelers, infamously wore baseball caps with the words “Free Hernandez” written on them at their birthday celebration in July 2013.

Maurkice later posted an apology on Twitter that read, “I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate, and I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions.”
In December 2013, Mike Pouncey testified before a grand jury regarding a case related to Hernandez.
In 2014, an Instagram photo of Mike Pouncey’s girlfriend and his son that appeared to be taken at Mike Pouncey’s house showed a framed Hernandez jersey hanging on a wall in the background.
