A Lawndale man who allegedly shot a store clerk in the head for refusing to share his blunt was ordered held on $2 million bail during a Sunday court hearing.
Jaquel Foots, 20, who was charged with murder in the April 6 shooting death of 28-year-old Arsennial Allen, appeared before a judge at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
Prosecutors said Allen was smoking a blunt outside a store in the 2300 block of East 83rd Street in the South Chicago neighborhood just before 3:30 p.m.
Foots wanted a hit of the blunt and Allen, a store employee, refused, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Jillian Anselmo.
The incident, which was caught on surveillance video, shows Foots taking a few steps forward, turning around and shooting Allen in the head, Anselmo said.
Allen was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5:05 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy on April 7 determined that Allen, of the 8200 block of South Paxton Avenue, died of the gunshot wound, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Foots fled the scene but was later identified as the shooter. He was arrested Saturday near 7900 block of South Escanaba Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood.
Foots was employed as a landscaper, according to his attorney.
