A man and a woman died Wednesday night in Elmwood Park after the car they were traveling in hit a tree, according to police.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office stated that they were pronounced dead at 10:13 p.m. in the 3100 block of North 80th Avenue in Elmwood Park. The woman has been identified as Katherine Brooks, 26, of Cicero, and the man was identified as Diego Perez, 25, of Chicago, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Elmwood Park Police Chief Frank Fagiano said it was a single-car crash. He said the car was headed north on 80th Avenue “at a high rate of speed” before striking a tree, “and the two people inside died at the scene.”

The impact of the collision caused the vehicle to wrap around the tree and the engine to be knocked back into the vehicle, Fagiano said. He said the man was in the driver’s seat and the female was in the passenger seat.
“No one else was hurt,” Fagiano said. “That’s all we know right now.”
