
Caramel. The sticky, sweet treat that’s not only a pain in the ass to get out of your teeth but also a point of contention among friends, relatives and coworkers due to its dual pronunciation. Are you team ker-uh-muhl? Or are you team kar-muhl?
Well, in honor of National Caramel Day (April 5), Werther’s Original decided to settle the great debate with a national survey. And the results showed that 57 percent of Americans pronounce the candy ker-uh-muhl, while only 43 percent pronounce it kar-muhl.
But in a regional breakdown, it should come as no surprise that in the Midwest, and only in the Midwest, did the two-syllable pronunciation come out on top as the most popular articulation.
