Following a village poll, where Buffalo Grove officials mailed “ballots” to residents living near Brandywyn Lane and Thompson Boulevard, a majority of area homeowners said they supported eliminating parking to widen local roads.

Buffalo Grove officials have been considering two options to widen stretches along Brandywyn Lane and Thompson Boulevard. One option would include the removal of 82 trees to widen the streets by two feet and add more parking lanes, said village engineer Darren Monico.

The other option would eliminate parking lanes that already exist to widen the road and maintain the trees located there.

To gather input from residents living in the area, village officials mailed ballots to homeowners and asked them to vote for one of the options, while also inviting them to attend an open house on the project, which was held March 16.

Even though voting officially closed March 17, nearly half of all the ballots that were sent back before the open house strongly favored the elimination of parking, Monico said.

“From what the residents have told us, there’s just not a lot of parking there during the day,” Monico said.

Located throughout residential areas in Buffalo Grove, the project tentatively would affect Brandywyn Lane, from Prairie Road south to Deerfield Parkway, and Thompson Boulevard, from Weiland Road west to Arlington Heights Road.

The aging streets could be widen to better accommodate cars, village officials have said.

Despite having two different options in mind, village officials believe the project would cost about the same no matter what option village board members ultimately decide, Monico said.

“All the curbs are coming out, either way,” he said. “It’s the same dirt going into the same bucket from the same machine.”

Construction on the road project could start by 2020, Monico said.
