A family dog died Sunday as Lake Zurich fire officials responded to a residential blaze in the 500 block of Richmond Circle, according to a news release from the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department.

A resident returned home to discover the fire and called 911, officials said, with first responders arriving at 11:42 a.m. and reporting heavy smoke coming from the two-story home. They determined it was coming from the basement, and had the blaze under control at 12:02 p.m., according to the release.

One occupant was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation after attempting to rescue the family pets, officials said. Two dogs were pulled from the home, according to the release.

“Unfortunately, one did perish,” the release says.

The other dog was treated at the scene by fire crews and transported to an area veterinarian for further evaluation and treatment, officials said.

The fire was under investigation, and the home was deemed uninhabitable, according to the release.
