Midlothian police are investigating a shooting early Tuesday that forced the closure of several streets and prompted officials to close public schools in the village for the day, authorities said.
People were taken into custody, but the exact number was not released by Midlothian police, who issued a news release Tuesday afternoon but did not immediately respond to requests for other information. There was no report of injuries.
According to the news release, officers responded about 4:30 a.m. to a report of shots fired in the area of 149th Street and Central Park Avenue.
Officers learned a man was inside a home with several other people, police said. A person ran from the house, which prompted a man to follow, pull a gun and shoot several rounds at him, police said.
Midlothian officers set up a perimeter around the house and later were assisted by the South Suburban Emergency Response Team, police said.
Police said “the subjects surrendered from inside the house and were all taken into custody.”
Several streets in the area were blocked off while police responded to the incident.
The situation appeared to be resolved by 11 a.m. A response team truck left and an officer who was picking up barricades said it the situation was over.
The names of those taken into custody were not immediately released.
Bremen High School, which is within blocks of where the incident happened, was closed “due to a police situation in the neighborhood,” according to the school’s website. School officials planned to send out a message later regarding scheduled after-school activities, according to the website.
All grade schools in Midlothian School District 143 also were closed because of “police activity in the area,” according to the district’s website. The schools include Central Park, Kolmar, Spaulding and Springfield. Classes will resume Wednesday, according to the website.
