Two men were arrested Friday night after police found guns and weapons in their possession following an unsuccessful attempt to flee in their vehicle and on foot, Round Lake Park police said.

Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko said Sunday that at about 10:30 p.m. Friday, a Round Lake Park police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for “an equipment violation.”

The vehicle, which Filenko said was traveling east on Route 134 and was occupied by three people, did not stop and instead fled into a business area that came to a dead end on Center Street in Hainesville.

The occupants of the vehicle fled east on foot into a marshy area, at which point, Filenko said, Grayslake officers assisted in setting up a perimeter and the Lake Villa Police Department responded with a K-9 unit, according to police reports.

A gun and drugs that authorities said were recovered in a Friday night incident in which two Waukegan men were charged with several felonies after allegedly attempting to flee Round Lake Park police.

All three subjects were apprehended, and Filenko said that in a post-arrest interview, one of the suspects said that as soon as he heard the K9 barking, he surrendered, according to Filenko.

“That was undoubtedly the smartest decision he made that night,” Filenko said.

Officers recovered a fully loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun, 15 grams of crack cocaine and 25 grams of cannabis, according to police.

Two men were charged with several felony counts and were being held Sunday in the Lake County jail in lieu of $150,000 bail after appearing in Lake County Bond Court over the weekend, Filenko said.

Jarvis J. Smith, 27, of Waukegan, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, possession of cannabis, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice, according to Filenko.

Darius D. Dixon, 27, of Waukegan, was charged with obstruction of justice, and also was being held on a parole violation, the chief said.

The third individual in the car had not been charged as of Sunday afternoon, and Filenko said the investigation is ongoing and includes discussions with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding potential charges involving the crack cocaine.
