Two women were injured in separate shootings that occurred less than an hour apart over the weekend in Aurora, police said.

In the first, at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday, a 22-year-old woman in the front passenger seat of a white 2009 Chevrolet Malibu was shot more than once as the car traveled southbound on Fourth Avenue near its intersection with State Street, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said in an email.

A 23-year-old man was driving the Malibu with the woman and two other passengers, a 29-year-old man and 23-year-old woman, Ferrelli said.

Someone standing with several other people on the West side of the street apparently fired into the car, and the 22-year-old woman sustained several gunshot wounds, but police have no further suspect information Ferrelli said. While none of the other three people in the car were hit, gunfire did strike a home on the 400 block of State Street and a vehicle parked on the same block, Ferrelli said.

After the shooting, the Malibu driver drove directly toward Rush Copley Medical Center to seek treatment for the woman, but was involved in a minor one-car traffic crash at Montgomery and Waterford, Ferrelli said. Aurora Fire Department paramedics went to the crash location and finished transporting the woman, Ferrelli said. No other injuries were reported.

Just after 3 a.m. the same day, a 20-year-old woman sustained a non-life-threatening injury to her eye after shots were fired at an SUV she was riding in near the intersection of New York Street and Asbury Drive, Ferrelli said. Police did not specify whether the injury was from a bullet or other matter.

The only other person in the car, a 2008 turquoise Ford Explorer, was the driver, a 20-year-old man, who told police he’d been eastbound on New York Street when a vehicle drove up on his right side and someone opened fire, Ferrelli said.

The man drove to Rush Copley, and the woman was transferred to another suburban Chicago facility, Ferrelli said.

The pair were largely uncooperative with police, who have no further description of the suspect or vehicle they were in, Ferrelli said.

At this time, police don’t believe the shootings are related, Ferrelli said. Although no motive has been established, police have not ruled out street gang motivation in either case, Ferrelli said.
