The Indiana Supreme Court’s Commission on Race & Gender Fairness will hosting a public forum Monday in Gary, the first of five community forums held throughout the state.
The forum will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Indiana University Northwest in the John W. Anderson Library Conference Room.
The Indiana Commission on Race & Gender Fairness was created in 1999 to study and make recommendations on matters involving race and gender fairness in the Indiana judicial system. The commission recommends to the Supreme Court the adoption of policies and procedures promoting race and gender fairness. The commission is comprised of judges and lawyers form across the state.

“What we’re hoping to accomplish is simply a conversation,” said Myra Selby, the commission’s president and former Indiana Supreme Court judge. “One in which we are hearing from the public and they feel like they’re able to be heard.”
Their goal is to hear the concerns and recommendations of the citizens and ultimately make suggestions to the Supreme Court, she said.
“We’re asking questions of the public as they come and participate and as they’re giving us information and answers we’ll be taking that and considering it and based on what we learn in these talking forums we will then make recommendations to the court. “
The event is open to the public and free.
