The Village of Hampshire will no longer hold a free oil recycling program, according to officials.

Hampshire Trustee Jan Kraus, who has served on the village board since 2007, started the program during her first year as trustee. The program was usually held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on the first Saturday of every month from April to October at the village public works facility, 100 South Klick Street.

Kraus volunteered her time on those Saturdays to be there when people dropped off their used oil. The program was open to all Kane County residents.

An announcement about ending the program has been posted on the village website.

“Unfortunately, the Village of Hampshire had to discontinue its oil recycling program,” Kraus said. “We would like to thank everyone who participated correctly in recycling their used oil. There have been signs posted on the fence that there is no dumping there, yet people still dump oil and antifreeze in front of the fence. Due to liability issues, we can no longer continue the program. We now have cameras on the premises. Anyone caught on camera dumping oil or antifreeze will be fined. You can go to the website for Kane County to find out where you can now take your oil at: www.countyofkane.org/recycling. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. It was a pleasure serving those who cooperated legally with our program.”
