A Lake Central High School freshman is in the running for a $30,000 scholarship and the chance to have her artwork appear as a Google Doodle.
Ninth-grade student Veronica Gonzalez was named as Indiana’s state finalist winner of the annual Doodle 4 Google contest.
This year’s contest asked K-12 students to submit a drawing imagining their vision for the future.
Her artwork, entitled “The Sky’s Not the Limit” featured a celestial background with floating cities, space age transportation, aliens, artificial intelligence and disease cures.

It will now compete in a national contest online against 52 other entries for a chance to appear as a Google Doodle on March 31. The national winner will also be awarded a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education grant to their school for its computer lab or other technology.
Google has been hosting the K-12 Doodle 4 Google contest since 2008. Last year’s winner, Akilah Johnson, was a sophomore from Washington D.C., according to its website. The tech company has created 2,000 Google Doodles internationally since 2000, usually used to mark a day in history, or the birthday of a scientist or person with historical significance.
