A basement fire in Lake Forest on Thursday morning caused an estimated $150,000 in damage, according to Lake Forest fire officials.

Firefighters got a call at 9:39 a.m. saying there was a fire on the first block of West North Avenue, fire officials said, and they arrived to find smoke coming from the first and second floors.

There was “a moderate amount of gray smoke and no visible fire,” said Lake Forest Battalion Chief Mike Gallo.

Police escorted two elderly residents from the house, Gallo said, and firefighters pulled hoses through both the front and back doors. They also cut a hole in the roof of the garage with a saw to check whether the fire had reached there, he said.

The fire took 30 minutes to extinguish, according to a press release. Lake Bluff, Knollwood, Libertyville, North Chicago, Countryside, Lincolnshire, and Deerfield fire departments assisted. There were no injuries to either residents or firefighters, Gallo said.

Investigators from Lake Forest, Countryside and Lincolnshire fire departments, along with the state fire marshal’s office, will work on determining the cause of the fire over the next two weeks, he said.
