A woman from Sumner, Ill., was sentenced to 30 months of periodic imprisonment after pleading guilty to aggravated DUI for a June 2014 single-vehicle crash in Waukegan that killed her boyfriend.

Brandy Frederick, 28, pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI resulting in death, the most serious charge she faced, and was sentenced by Judge James Booras on Thursday to 30 months of periodic imprisonment, during which she will only be released for treatment and medical services.

She was also sentenced to four years of probation to follow her jail time, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Brown.

Frederick lost both of her legs and her boyfriend, 24-year-old C.J. Allen McGill of Beach Park, was killed when she was speeding on Lewis Avenue and crashed into a utility pole, according to Waukegan police.

Brown said Frederick’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit following the 3 a.m. crash on June 28, 2014.

In exchange for her plea, the state dropped lesser charges of reckless homicide against Frederick.

According to Waukegan police reports, officers responded to a call about a vehicle striking a utility pole in the 1700 block of Lewis around 3 a.m. that night. Officers arriving at the scene reported that the vehicle had severe damage that required two victims to be extricated from inside by the Waukegan Fire Department.

McGill was killed instantly, according to reports, and Frederick was critically injured and flown by Flight for Life to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Both Frederick and McGill had been wearing seat belts, police said.
