For nearly 29 years, Wayne’s Pizza in Third Lake has been experimenting with unusual pizza combinations.

But that might be expected of a place that’s offered a breakfast pizza since 1990. This gourmet dish includes scrambled eggs, cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, and whatever else you want to add.

“We start with a pan-crust pizza and scramble the eggs. It’s homemade, from scratch,” owner Donna Dayment said. “The recipe has been around forever. Many people get one pizza and order one to take home.”

The breakfast pizza is prepared every morning and is served as part of a slice special.

Her late husband, Wayne, was always mixing different ingredients, she said. “Fruit pizza, shrimp cocktail — we’d be his guinea pigs,” Dayment said.

Some of those experiments, including the BLT and the salt bomb, made their way onto the menu.

“The BLT is a thin crust with cheese and bacon cooked on top, then we add mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato,” Dayment said. “Without all the bread, it’s crunchy, nice and fresh. The salt bomb is one of our specialties. Wayne liked all the salty toppings like sausage, bacon and green olives. This is a house favorite.”

The western is part barbecue and pizza sauces, chicken, bacon and onion. Another specialty pizza, the meat lovers, combines sausage, pepperoni and bacon.

Wayne’s Pizza does a brisk slice business for the lunchtime crowd, and the line often snakes out the door. “The slices appeal to a lot of people,” Dayment said.

The secret to Wayne’s Pizza’s success is not just the creative concoctions, Dayment said. “There are a number of things, like the quality of the product and high-quality ingredients. We pride ourselves on customer service. We’ve been here a long time, and that proves it.”
