An Elgin teen charged with murder remains held in the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center on $750,000 bail after a judge this week denied a request to have the amount lowered, court records show.
Anton Cross Jr., who turned 18 on Saturday, is accused of the Dec. 27 shooting death of 18-year-old Timothy Jones as part of what authorities described as an ongoing dispute between the pair, according to records. Prosecutors allege Cross used a 9mm handgun to shoot Jones in the abdomen. Elgin police were called to the 1600 block of Maple Lane around 12:30 p.m. that day on a report of a gunshot victim. Jones died a short time later at an area hospital. He was in his senior year at Bartlett High School, according to his obituary.
Cross’ attorney sought a reduced bond during a Tuesday hearing, but Judge D.J. Tegeler declined to change the amount, according to records. The judge previously granted a request to allow Cross’ grandmother, aunt and siblings to visit him at the Juvenile Justice Center.
Cross is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on March 1.
