A woman burned by a fire at her Aurora apartment Monday morning was taken to the hospital, according to fire officials.

At 7:31 a.m. Monday, Aurora firefighters responded to an activated fire alarm on the 400 block of North Lake Street on the city’s near West Side, according to a news release from the fire department.

Fire crews arrived to find smoke on the first floor of a four-story, 30-unit apartment building, according to the news release.

In one of the first-floor apartments, a candle had come into contact with a mattress and started a small fire, according to the news release.

It appeared the candle had been on a nightstand but it’s unclear how it ended up on the mattress, said fire spokesman Capt. Jim Rhodes.

When the woman tried to put out the fire, she sustained a burn to one of her feet, and she was transported to the hospital, Rhodes said. It is unknown whether she was awake or asleep when the fire started, Rhodes said.

Ultimately, 22 firefighters took five minutes to extinguish the fire, which they confined to the mattress and contents in the bedroom where it started, according to the news release.

Fire officials estimated the loss to the structure and contents at $500. The apartment is habitable, but needs to be cleaned from minor smoke damage and have a window replaced, according to the news release.
