The open shots are going to be there. The guy in the post guarantees it.

Cameron Krutwig is a wide-bodied 6-foot-9 center who needs to be surrounded, and he throws crosscourt lasers to open shooters.

Jacobs has six or seven players who can capitalize, which is why the Golden Eagles are having so much success.

Ryan Phillips took his turn Saturday.

Phillips, a 6-foot-3 junior, made his first seven shots and scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter as the Golden Eagles defeated New Trier 63-49 at the War on the Shore on Saturday at Evanston’s Beardsley Gym.

The Loyola-bound Krutwig added 13 points and 16 rebounds for Jacobs (18-1).

“He can do that at times,” Jacobs coach Jimmy Roberts said. “We want to be able to stop saying he can do that at times, because he’s a really, really good player.

“I was happy for him to be able to come out the way he did in this kind of environment, because people outside of our area, they know Cam but they don’t know our other guys. That was big for him.”

New Trier (10-9) scored the first five points of the second half to cut Jacobs’ seven-point halftime lead to 31-29, but it was all Golden Eagles from there.

Krutwig’s four fellow starters combined for seven 3-pointers as the Trevians attempted to contain him in the post.

“It is fun for us to come out here and play and just kind of be us,” Krutwig said. “Conference, they all know us, the scouting report.

“They played last night, we played Tuesday, not a lot of prep time. Just come out and be basketball players, and that’s what we did. It was a good win for us.”
