Lyric Opera — Bellini’s “Norma”: Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky brings another of her celebrated bel canto heroines to Lyric, where she will assume the title role of the tragic Druid priestess in director Kevin Newbury’s new-to-Chicago production. Axiom Brass: The Chicago-based quintet explores contemporary brass works and outer space with a program that includes music by Jan Bach and Anders Hillborg, as well as local composer James M. Chinese New Year Celebration Concert: Symphony Center will honor the occasion with a two-part program. Members of China’s Shaanxi Province Song and Dance Theatre National Orchestra will perform traditional Chinese selections to begin the concert. Lyric Opera — Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”: Director Neil Armfield’s new production treats the composer’s tuneful singspiel as a grand show put on by kids in the backyard of their parents’ suburban Chicago home, circa 1960. A strong cast includes Matthew Polenzani as the princely hero Tamino, with Christiane Karg as Pamina, Adam Plachetka as the bird catcher Papageno, Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night and Christof Fischesser as Sarastro.
