Back-to-back prayer vigils are planned Saturday for Terrelle Suggs and Andrew Dockery, Aurora cousins who died weeks apart in recent shootings.

Andrew Dockery, 26, was killed in a drive-by shooting New Year’s Eve on Aurora’s near southeast side. Suggs, 20, took a bullet to the head when the car he was in was shot at and crashed Jan. 13 in Montgomery.

The vigils, sponsored by the Aurora Prayer Coalition for Reconciliation, will take place at locations where each man was shot and each last about 30 to 40 minutes, giving people enough time to drive across town from one to the other, said the Rev. Dan Haas.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, the vigil for Dockery will start on the 400 block of Melrose Avenue. Suggs’ vigil is to begin at 2:30 p.m. on Orchard Road just north of Jericho Road, Haas said. Street parking is available on Melrose Avenue, and there is a church parking lot on the corner of Jericho and Orchard participants can use, Haas said.

The men’s families felt it was best to have their vigils on the same day, Haas said. The death of two relatives during such a short time span “increases grief and sadness for family members,” Haas said.

The vigils will include scripture readings and prayers for the victims, for their families and for a peaceful end to the violence, Haas said.
