In “Italian American Reconciliation,” a comedy production at Lake Forest High School that starts Jan. 26, timing is important.

“In a drama, its more about getting the characterization and the mood correct,” said Gracie Stockton, a senior who plays Aunt May. “In a comedy, so much is about timing and beats and chemistry. You have to make sure the delivery and the little intricacies line up and the right pace.”

The play is a comedy written by John Patrick Shanley. The playwright is also known for “Doubt” and “Moonstruck,” both of which were made into award-winning films.

In the play, a man named Huey wants to win back his ex-wife Janice. His friend Aldo thinks that’s a bad idea because Huey has a great current girlfriend. Also, Aldo might be attracted to Janice. Nevertheless, Aldo speaks to Janice on behalf of Huey. And on it goes.

“I’m Italian and (the play) reminded me of my family and growing up and some cultural things that are humorous,” said Joe Pulio, a teacher at the school and the play’s director. “Second, it’s an incredible acting piece for some of the students. It’s teaching them technique.”

Zachary Demet, a sophomore, plays Huey.

“The whole story kind of revolved around him, about how he lost his manhood after his divorce from his abusive ex-wife,” Demet said. “(The play) is very different, something you don’t usually see a high school doing, with the adult themes.”

Italian American Reconciliation will be performed at 7 p.m. on Jan. 26, 27 and 28 at Lake Forest High School, 1285 N. McKinley. Tickets are $12 for adults or $6 for students and seniors. Tickets may be purchased in advance on the Lake Forest High School website at www.lakeforestschools.org.
