When is a giant anteater not so giant? When it is a baby, like the one recently born and now on exhibit at Brookfield Zoo.

The zoo on Tuesday announced the Nov. 15 birth of a female pup to Tulum, a female, and Lupito, a male, second-time parents. The animals, which do, indeed, eat ants (and other insects), are in decline in the wild and considered a vulnerable species in their native territory of Honduras, Brazil and northern Argentina.

Zoos typically wait to announce births until a newborn’s health seems assured. The yet-unnamed female can be seen riding her mother’s back, typical behavior, in the South America section of the zoo’s Tropic World exhibit Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday, with the sire on exhibit the other days.
