Elected officials in the Village of Wauconda are safe from term limits for the time being after a potential ballot referendum was thrown out Tuesday night.

A petition circulated by resident C. Mark Abernathy sought to limit Wauconda’s mayor and six village trustees to two four-year terms. It would have appeared on the April 4 ballot, had it been successful.

But resident Steve Diol filed four objections to the petition, arguing it did not contain 296 valid signatures, the minimum amount required to qualify for the ballot. Diol also alleged that the petition’s pages were not properly numbered in consecutive order as required by law, that each page did not have the same heading as required by law and that the ballot question was confusing and difficult to implement.

The village’s three-person electoral board — Mayor Frank Bart, Wauconda Clerk Gina Strelecki and Trustee Lincoln Knight — rules on such objections. The panel met Tuesday night, with Trustee John Barbini sitting in for Knight because Knight would have been affected by the proposed referendum.

The electoral board dismissed three of Diol’s objections but agreed that the petition contained improper and blank page numbering, Wauconda Village Administrator Douglas Maxeiner said in an email. As such, the petition was dismissed and will not appear on the ballot in April.
