An Aurora man struck by gunfire Thursday afternoon as he drove through the city’s East Side is expected to survive, according to police.

At about 12:09 p.m. Thursday, a 19-year-old Aurora man was driving eastbound on Columbia Street at Beach Street when a person standing on the northwest corner of the intersection fired multiple shots at the man’s SUV, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said in an email.

Bullets struck the man’s left thigh and grazed his right calf, causing non-life-threatening wounds, Ferrelli said.

After he was shot, the man, who had no passengers, drove himself to a friend’s house on the 300 block of South Broadway, where he parked, and the friend took him to a hospital in another vehicle, Ferrelli said.

The person who did the shooting walked away after firing the shots, Ferrelli said.

The man shot and witnesses have been uncooperative and the shooting is probably gang-related, Ferrelli said.

The suspect is described as Hispanic, 5 feet 5 inches tall, of slim build, with scruffy facial hair, and was wearing blue jeans and a black hoodie, according to police.
