Three boys and one girl between the ages of 15 and 17 were charged with criminal trespass to a motor vehicle. They were arrested by Chicago police at approximately 1 a.m. Jan. 18 on the 2700 block of North Francisco Avenue, according to the Norridge Police Department.
Police said at about 8:15 p.m. Jan. 17, a man was sitting in a parked Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck with the engine running on the corner of West Berteau and North Ottawa avenues. Norridge Police Sgt. Brian Loughran said the man was waiting to pick up a family member and was likely distracted by his phone when a male suspect opened the door of the man’s truck and shouted at him to get out of the vehicle.
The suspect, who police said did not display a weapon, drove off in the truck with the victim’s iPhone still inside, police said. The victim worked with police to track the location of his phone using the “Find My iPhone” function offered by Apple, which lets iPhone owners see where their phone is from a remote location, police said.
The phone’s location was tracked to Chicago in the early morning hours of Jan. 18, and police said the stolen pickup was reportedly involved in two crashes with parked cars before police pulled it over and arrested the four teens inside.
“The original taking of the vehicle was only done by one person, and [police] weren’t able to determine if it was any of them,” Loughran said. “It could have been one of the three males or someone who gave them the truck.”
The suspects were taken to the Norridge Police Department where they were charged, Loughran said. The victim was unharmed, police said.
