Darnell Wynn has been found guilty of attempted murder for stomping on a man’s head long after he had lost consciousness after a disagreement in an Aurora alley.
Wynn, 56, of the 100 block of West Galena Boulevard in Aurora, was found guilty of attempted murder and aggravated battery by Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler, who oversaw Wynn’s two-day bench trial this week. Wynn waived his right to a jury trial.
Wynn remains in Kane County Jail with his sentencing scheduled for March 17.
Prosecutors previously said they would seek an extended prison term for Wynn given the “brutal and heinous” nature of the attack.
Prosecutors alleged Wynn stomped and kicked a man he knew in the head more than 20 times during a September 2015 altercation that escalated from an argument between the pair near Middle Avenue and Cross Street. Police responding to the scene found the then-54-year-old victim unconscious and bleeding severely in the street with multiple facial fractures.
According to a press release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Wynn struck the victim with a few punches and the victim fell to the ground. After the victim lost consciousness, Wynn continued to punch him in the face and head 20 more times. At that point a motorist who had seen the altercation stopped his car and yelled to Wynn, “Stop! You’ve won! You’ll kill him!” The witness then left to call 911, according to the release.
Wynn stood up, walked around for a few seconds then stomped on the victim’s head 22 times, once with both feet, before he left, the release stated.
The victim suffered multiple broken facial bones and was hospitalized for several months. He has permanent scarring, some memory loss and struggles with everyday activities and motor-skill impairment, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office.
Authorities pointed out at the time of Wynn’s arrest that his heels were broken from repeatedly kicking and stomping on the man. Wynn attended his initial court appearance in a wheelchair because of the injuries.
