In a first collaboration between Lyric Opera, L.A. Opera and the Joffrey Ballet, a new coproduction of the 1774 Paris version of Gluck’s opera “Orphee et Eurydice” will debut next season in Chicago and Los Angeles, the companies announced Tuesday.

The stage direction, choreography and designs will be by John Neumeier, the internationally celebrated director and chief choreographer of Germany’s Hamburg Ballet.

The Lyric performances, which will open the 2017-18 season Sept. 23 at the Civc Opera House, will have Russian tenor Dmitry Korchak (debut) as Orpheus, Canadian soprano and Ryan Opera Center alumna Andriana Chuchman as Eurydice and American soprano Lauren Snouffer as Amour. Harry Bicket will conduct. Performances will continue to Oct. 15. The 1774 French version of the Gluck masterpiece will enter the Lyric repertory for the first time.

L.A. Opera is scheduled to present the new “Orphee” in March, with different principal singers under James Conlon, the company’s music director. Chicago and Los Angeles will be the only U.S. cities presenting the show.

The Hamburg State Opera also has signed on as a co-producer and will give performances with the Hamburg Ballet during the 2018-19 season.
