A semi-truck fire on Saturday in Lake Forest closed southbound traffic on Route 41 for about five hours.

Firefighters received a 911 call at 2:35 p.m. about a truck on fire just north of the Lake Forest Hospital exit between Deerpath Road and Gage Lane, according to a news release. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find a refrigerated trailer containing wine and cheese fully on fire.

“The driver had detached the truck from the trailer,” said interim Fire Chief Pete Siebert.

Firefighters found a fire hydrant near Deerhaven Child Care and Learning Center and had to lay out 1,000 feet of hose – the entire supply of a fire engine – to reach it, Siebert said. Firefighters also used chemical foam to extinguish the fire. Lake Bluff and Knollwood fire departments assisted.

When firefighters were done, Route 41 was wet and icy.

“We had to get IDOT down with some (road) salt,” Siebert said. “We also had to get it towed away.”

There were no injuries and damage was an estimated $250,000, mostly due to damage to the refrigerated trailer.

Both the Lake Forest Fire Department and Lake Forest Police are investigating the cause of fire.
