Aurora fire department investigators are looking into the cause of a fire at a house late at night New Year’s Day on the city’s East Side.

At 11:23 p.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to the fire on the 1100 block of Symphony Drive and found heavy smoke showing from the second-floor window of a two-story, single-family home, according to a news release from fire spokesman Capt. Jim Rhodes.

A resident called 911 after noticing smoke in the house, according to the fire department.

Firefighters located the fire in the basement and 22 firefighters put it out in about 30 minutes, according to the news release.

Fire officials deemed the house uninhabitable, causing seven people to be displaced, according to the fire department. The residents are staying with a nearby family and did not require help from victim services or the Red Cross, according to the news release.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Tuesday afternoon. Fire officials estimated the total loss for the structure and its contents at $210,000.
