Looking to take up a winter sport this season, but don’t know what gear you need to start?
We spoke to two top-level winter sports retailers on what’s cutting-edge this season for both newbies and seasoned pros.
Tracy Gibbons, president of Sturtevant’s in Bellevue, Wash., near Seattle, said that when it comes to winter sports, equipment has come a long way in the past few years, and everything is easier to use, especially for beginners.

“This will be across every sports category, but everything today is lighter, warmer and designed to be more comfortable,” she said.
Teddy Schiavoni, owner of Summit Ski & Snowboard Framingham, Mass., near Boston, said products are lighter and customizable, so wearers no longer have to worry about a “breaking in” period. “Everything fits on the first day,” he said.
