Losing weight or exercising more — or even running in the Chicago Marathon if you’re really ambitious — is often top of mind when coming up with New year’s resolutions.

And keeping with tradition, the Chicago Park District is inviting residents to try out its fitness centers and classes for one week for free. The Park District is also hoping people will sign up for memberships during the free period that runs Jan. 9 to 15.

Monthly memberships range from $10 to $22. Three-month memberships cost $30 to $60, and annual memberships are priced at $85 to $225. A membership that allows use of any Park District fitness center — also known as a “Gold Card” — costs $80 for three months or $250 for the year.

Other neighborhood gyms including LA Fitness and XSport also give out free multiday guest passes. However, the Park District does not charge the hefty enrollment fees some private gyms do to join, in addition to monthly or yearly membership fees, a parks spokeswoman said.

Registration is required online or in-person at any of the 73 fitness centers during the annual Park District promotion. The fitness centers are equipped with treadmills, cross trainers, stationary bikes and free weights among other machines. Classes include kickboxing, boot camp, CrossFit, spinning, hip-hop aerobics, Zumba, yoga, Pilates and barre sculpt.
