A 90-year-old Lakeview East man died Sunday from heart disease and cold exposure, making him the fourth person to die of cold-related causes this winter in Cook County, according to the medical examiner’s office.
Thaddeus Kowalewski, of the 3400 block of North Lake Shore Drive, was pronounced dead at 11:16 a.m. Sunday at Presence St. Joseph Hospital, according to the medical examiner’s office. Kowalewski died of heart disease, with hypothermia due to cold exposure a secondary factor, the office determined following an examination Tuesday.
Police were called to the hospital following Kowalewski’s death. Officers were told that he had been brought to the hospital after a fire department crew was called to his block about 4:45 p.m. Friday to help a man who they found outside of a home and who was confused and who turned out to have an abnormally low body temperature, according to police.
