Two cars left running unattended by their owners on Sunday in Aurora were stolen and later recovered by police.

Between 12:45 a.m. and 12:55 a.m. Sunday, a 2002 Ford Focus wagon worth $5,000 was taken from the 700 block of View Street, on the city’s West Side, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said in an email. An Aurora Police officer on patrol recognized the car as stolen about 5:15 p.m. the same day in the 500 block of Spruce Street, Ferrelli said. No new damage to the car was reported.

The other car, a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe worth about $2,000, was taken between 11:35 and 11:45 a.m. Sunday from the first block of South Anderson Street on the city’s East Side, Ferrelli said. The owner found the car at 6:49 the next morning at the intersection of North Avenue and Ohio Street. The owner apparently stops to pick up a friend for work every day in that area and saw his car parked on the street, Ferrelli said.

About $600 worth of clothing, electronics and tools were reported missing from the Hyundai when it was found. However, three bags of roadway salt that did not belong to the owner were in the car, Ferrelli said.

Police have no suspect information for either car theft, Ferrelli said.

Police ask anyone with information about the incidents to call Aurora police investigators at 630-256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at 630-892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to any arrests.
