As the first radio play-by-play broadcaster to ever utter the words “the Cubs win the World Series,” Pat Hughes knew that whatever he said would be sports history.
Thing is, he didn’t remember part of the call.
Chalk it up to the surreal space his mind must have wandered to after the Cubs, his team to call for 21 seasons, ended 107 years of “next year,” but “I had no recollection whatsoever of saying ‘the Cubs have done it,'” said Hughes, who has compiled a CD of radio highlights from the regular season and playoffs.
“I heard that the next morning. We got home from Cleveland, and I’m driving home, it’s like 8 in the morning, and they played the highlight. And I had not heard it all night. And I think we made the final call, ‘The Cubs win the World Series.’ Then, ‘they’re jumping around like a bunch of delirious 10-year-olds,’ then I said, ‘The Cubs have done it!’ And I thought, ‘Where did that come from?'”
Hughes said that if he ever tried to script out the historic call beforehand — which he warned himself against ever doing — he would’ve punctuated it with “the longest championship drought in American history is over.” Instead he said he characterized it as the “longest drought in the history of American sports is over.”
“It came out OK. I can live with it,” he said.
The idea for the CD, available on baseballvoices.com for $19.99, sprung from conversations he had with Mitch Rosen, operations director at WSCR-AM 670, which became the team’s flagship radio station this season. Over the course of about a week, Hughes wrote, narrated and edited the disc with production director Russ Mitera.
But in the age of on-demand video, is there a market for an audio highlight reel? Rosen thinks so.
“I like to compare it to a good book,” Rosen said. “I fall asleep with the book on my chest. I look at baseball the same way. There’s something special about the relationship you have with the announcer, with the team.”
Hughes admitted he played it safe with Dexter Fowler’s leadoff home run off Indians pitcher Corey Kluber.

“On Fowler’s home run, the wind was howling out. I knew he hit it well, but I don’t think anyone thought it was going to leave the yard until it actually did,” he said. Hughes noted that outfielders sometimes feign like they didn’t make a catch as a way of saying “gotcha.”
“You ever seen a guy do that?” Hughes asked. “It’s funny, but it’s not funny when you’re broadcasting and you have to change your call. If you say, ‘And it’s gone for a home run! Oh, wait a minute, (Rajai) Davis, he fooled us. He made the catch.’ I didn’t want that to be the way Game 7 started for me. So I waited, and I waited probably a little longer than I should’ve, but I wanted to make sure.”
Hughes just was glad that his voice didn’t crack during the call of his career.
“But it was exciting, no question,” he said. “I never experienced a moment quite like that ever, and I don’t know that I ever will again.”
