Residents honored for two decades of service to Toys for Tots
John and Dee Barbino of Lincolnwood were honored by the board of trustees for 23 years of service to the Toys for Tots Program.
John Barbino accepted a proclamation from Lincolnwood Mayor Jerry Turry, who said the village decided to rename the campaign “John and Dee Barbino Toys for Tots” starting in 2017.
Toys for Tots is a program the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve started in 1947 to collect new, unwrapped toys during the holiday season. The toys are distributed to needy families in communities all over the U.S.
The Barbino’s began overseeing the village’s Toys for Tots program in 1993, according to Lincolnwood police Chief Bob LaMantia.
New assistant village manager to serve as authorized agent of the IMRF
The village board, as part of the Dec. 6 consent agenda, appointed assistant village manager Ashley Engelmann as the village’s new authorized agent for the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.
The IMRF provides employees of local governments and school districts in Illinois with a system for the payment of retirement and other employee benefits, including disability and life insurance.
As a member of IMRF, the village is required to appoint a village staff member to serve as its authorized agent, and the assistant village manager has been filling the role since 2008, according to village officials.
Engelmann, is the former public works director, but replaced former assistant village manager Doug Petroshius who resigned as of Dec. 9.

A contract for landscaping services the village has with Skokie-based KGI Landscaping Company was renewed for one year as part of the consent agenda at a price increase of $216 over the current contract.
In April of this year, the village awarded a $36,000 contract to the company for landscaping and maintenance of village-owned medians, planting beds and the aquatic center.
The areas were previously maintained by the public works department, but staff shortages prompted the village to seek a contract with a landscaping company, according to village officials.
The next Lincolnwood village board meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 6900 N. Lincoln Ave.
