A 10-month-old boy was killed in a crash early Sunday morning on the Eisenhower Expressway near Des Plaines Avenue in Forest Park, after the driver of the vehicle had stopped the car on the highway, according to the Illinois State Police.
According to Cook County court records, the driver, Chicago resident Shante Nelson, 38, has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence with great bodily harm.
The 10-month-old, Tejay K. Hughes, of Berwyn, was taken to Loyola Hospital after the crash, officials said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said that he died Tuesday.
Police said Nelson stopped the vehicle, a blue Hyundai Elantra, on the eastbound side of I-290 with no lights on. The car was rear-ended by a Honda Odyssey at about 3:30 a.m, according to the state police. The driver of the van, a 50-year-old Chicago man, suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Woodrow Montgomery.
Authorities said the boy was not properly restrained at the time of the crash. Montgomery said the boy’s relationship to Nelson is not yet known.
