Thirty-eight seasons and exactly 300 wins after becoming the head football coach at Montini, Chris Andriano announced his retirement Sunday night at his final team’s awards banquet.
Mike Bukovsky, an assistant to Andriano for 27 years, will replace Andriano. Both moves were announced by @MontiniFootball on Twitter.
Andriano’s 300-128 record leaves him tied for sixth on Illinois’ all-time wins list, but it will be the six state championships Montini won in the twilight of his career, including four straight in Class 5A from 2009-12, that he’ll be remembered for most.
The Broncos won their first state title in Class 4A 2004, and Montini recorded its first 14-0 season on the way to the 6A championship in 2015. The Broncos had reached seven consecutive state finals before losing in the second round this season. Montini qualified for the playoffs in each of Andriano’s final 24 seasons.
Bukovsky has been the Broncos’ defensive coordinator for all six state titles. He joins Andriano and Jim Kavanaugh, who was 50-45-3 from 1968-78, as the three coaches in team history.
Bukovsky also won eight state championships from 2000-10 as head coach of Montini’s wrestling team, and he led the Broncos to a state title in softball in 2016.
