A vacancy on the six-member Harwood Heights Village Board left by last month’s early departure of former Trustee Michael Gadzinski has been filled. Mayor Arlene Jezierny appointed Anna Brzozowski Wegrecki to serve out the remaining five months of the term.
“You will find she has a great personality, is always willing to help and goes the extra mile,” Jezierny said of her appointment of Brzozowski Wegrecki, a 12-year resident of Harwood Heights.

Although Brzozowski Wegrecki’s appointment to the board marks her first time in public office, she’s been involved with the community for years, serving as an adult adviser for the Youth Commission and as the leader of the village’s gymnastics program. A first-generation Polish-American, Brzozowski Wegrecki volunteered for the Harwood Heights Summer Festival during the past three years and sings on the choir at St. Rosalie Catholic Church.
“I loved getting involved helping the kids in the Youth Commission,” Brzozowski Wegrecki said after her first board meeting as a trustee on Nov. 10. “Being on the board seemed like a natural fit because my outgoing personality means I’m not afraid to talk to people.”
Between her full-time job as a sales representative for steel supplier McNichols Company of Elk Grove Village, Brzozowski Wegrecki plans on finding time to run for office between now and April when voters will fill the three trustee seats expiring next year, along with selecting someone to serve out the two years remaining in Gadzinski’s term.
The trustees whose spots on the board will be up for grabs include Annette Brzezniak-Volpe, Larry Steiner and Lester Szlendak. None have announced publicly whether they plan to seek re-election.
Gadzinski resigned in mid-October, citing a decision to leave Harwood Heights for Chicago, where he bought a home last year. Addressing rumors that he may have lied about his residency, Gadzinski insisted he had not occupied the Chicago residence yet and had been living in a home owned by his family on the 4200 block of North Newland Avenue in Harwood Heights.
