Firefighters in Waukegan fought a blaze at the popular Hillery’s Bar-BQ restaurant on Lewis Avenue Thursday morning, the Waukegan Fire Department said in a news release.
There were no injuries. Firefighters, who were dispatched just before 9:30 a.m., had the fire under control within 30 minutes and were on the scene at 2021 N. Lewis for an hour, the department said.
The cause of the fire was unattended cooking, according to fire officials. There was “a working structure fire” in the barbecue pit when firefighters arrived, with “heavy flames” coming out of the chimney, the department said.
“Our firefighters once again did a tremendous job,” Fire Marshal Steven Lenzi said in the statement. “They worked hard to quickly recognize and assess the situation and initiate a safe response. Their quick actions and efforts will allow this business to reopen to their longtime Waukegan patrons in a much quicker manner.”
About half of all home fires involve cooking, the department said.
