Dominick Lupo, who has served as assistant principal of Lincoln Hall Middle School, will be its principal starting next school year.

The Lincolnwood District 74 school board approved the promotion during its Thursday school board meeting, choosing Lupo to replace Jean Weiss, who will retire at the end of the school year.

School board members approved a one-year employment contract for Lupo with a base salary of $134,000. The school district, according to the contract, will also pay for up to 75 percent of Lupo’s tuition costs to complete his doctoral degree.

Written into the contract is an option for the school board to renew Lupo’s contract before it expires on June 30, 2018.

Lupo has been second-highest in command at Lincoln Hall the last three years since he came to Lincolnwood from MacArthur Middle School in Prospect Heights, where he was assistant principal for two years, according to District 74.

“I have been so fortunate to be a part of the District 74 community for the past three years and I am extremely humbled by, and excited for, the opportunity to lead as the principal of Lincoln Hall,” Lupo said in a press release from the school district.

Weiss, who worked for District 74 for 25 years – including time as principal at each of the district’s three schools – is the third administrator to leave the district in the past year.

In a letter to the District 74 community sent out over the summer, Supt. Joseph Bailey said Weiss served the district in a variety of administrative roles over the years, including as principal and interim assistant superintendent.

“Throughout her time at District 74, Jean has striven to establish meaningful relationships and special connections with members of the Lincolnwood learning community,” Bailey wrote . “Throughout her career here, Dr. Weiss has successfully made her mark on both the district and within the hearts of those she has served.”

Weiss’s approaching retirement comes on the heels of Bailey’s own plans to leave the school district. In February, he announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2016-17 school year.

The school district tapped Kim Nasshan, the current assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, to assume Bailey’s spot in July 2017.

A new principal also joined Rutledge Hall at the beginning of the new school year after the school’s former leader, Beth Carmody, left to take a new job as the principal at Hubbard Woods School in Winnetka, according to the school district.

Scott Grens, came from Lakeview High School in Chicago to lead Rutledge Hall.
