Students from East and West Leyden high schools explored the physics behind carnival games on Monday.

“We’re doing project-based learning experience with our students this year,” said Brad Henning, a physics teacher at Leyden High School District 212. “The students had to choose and design a carnival game that they had to mark out to scale.”

The event, “Carnival Physics,” took place at West Leyden.

Once the students were done engineering the plans for their respective carnival games they presented them to students from the school’s construction and woods class for fabrication.

“We got a lot of materials delivered to us from the physics teachers and a cut list from the students who designed and created these games,” said Greg Lindemann, who teaches construction, woodshop and home repair at the district. “My students made the cuts and executed their plans. It was really nice to work with the science teachers and was very neat to see the students from these classes come together.”

On Monday, about 100 students from Westdale Elementary School will attended the event to play the carnival games and eat cotton candy and popcorn.
