Wilmette police warned residents this week to keep home, car and garage doors locked after officers dealt with a spate of overnight home and garage burglaries Monday and Tuesday.
Police said they were investigating a residential break-in that took place in the 100 block of Prairie Avenue sometime overnight. According to the report, a resident on that block awoke Tuesday to discover a laptop computer was missing from the home, and an exterior door was standing open. Police said that door was unlocked. There was no loss estimate figure for the computer in the initial police report.
During the same time period, someone got into a garage in the 1300 block of Gregory Avenue – again through an unlocked door – and took two bicycles. The initial police report didn’t give any loss estimates for the bikes.
A resident in the 1400 block of Wilmette Avenue reported an automobile burglary at about 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, police said. The resident reported seeing two men dressed in dark clothing leaving the area.
Deputy Chief Kyle Perkins said Wednesday that police also reported that someone got into an unlocked car in the 1200 block of Gregory overnight Monday or Tuesday, but nothing was taken in that incident.

“We’d like to remind people to lock their car doors and their doors at home, to help cut down on these incidents,” Perkins said.
A police department alert on the burglaries advised residents to call 911 immediately if they see suspicious activities, people or vehicles in their neighborhoods.
