Aurora police are cautioning residents not to leave their cars unattended and running after a recent car theft.

A gray Nissan Sentra was reported stolen at about 7 a.m. Oct. 25 after its owner left it parked and running unattended to warm up on the 700 block of High Street, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said in an email.

The Sentra, worth about $10,000, had Illinois license plates bearing Q260991, Ferrelli said. Police have no suspects, he said.

As colder weather sets in, these types of thefts tend to spike, police said. Stolen vehicles are often used in the commission of other crimes, including robberies and drive-by shootings, Ferrelli said. Police are reminding people to “take the opportunity away from car thieves and not run motor vehicles unattended,” Ferrelli said.

Police also noted that insurance companies don’t always cover losses caused by such negligence.

Aurora police can issue citations for vehicles left running and unattended on public property, Ferrelli said.
