Owners of the Double Door are no longer facing a Dec. 31 closing date after a Cook County Circuit Court ruling Monday.
The two-decade-old Wicker Park rock venue can stay in its current location “until our appeal rights are exhausted,” said Double Door attorney Cary Schiff. “We have the right to continue the appeal unimpeded” by the threat of closure.

An undisclosed appeal bond was set by Cook County Circuit Court Judge Orville Hambright Jr. and will be placed in holding while the hearings continue. The club also will continue to pay $26,000 in monthly rent.
“It’s a strong victory for us,” Schiff said. “Otherwise we would have had to move out on Dec. 31. Now the club will stay open while we go before the Appellate Court and give our arguments, and that takes a substantial amount of time.”
A few weeks ago, Double Door co-owners Joe Shanahan and Sean Mulroney confirmed that they had started negotiations that would pave the way to moving the club to Logan Square. Talks are continuing with Adam Saffro and Michael Hagenson, co-owners of the historic Logan Square State and Savings Bank building, at 2551 N. Milwaukee Ave.
At stake is the fate of 40 Double Door employees, a number of whom have been working at the club since it opened in 1994 at 1572 N. Milwaukee Ave.
