There are ways to have a good time with pumpkins besides carving them into jack-o’-lanterns and turning them into pumpkin pie. How about using them to knock over ghosts?

Visitors to downtown La Grange during Skeltober discovered a couple of ways to play with pumpkins including bowling and playing tic tac toe.

The fun and games were part of the event Saturdayat which children showed off their Halloween costumes during a parade, trick or treated at local businesses, played games and made crafts. In the weeks leading up to Halloween, merchants dressed skeletons in different costumes, including one in Cubs gear, to decorate their businesses.

Nancy Cummings, executive director of the La Grange Business Association, one of the organizers of the event, said there was a good turnout.

“It really was a record crowd,” she said. “We’re assuming that was because of the nice weather. People also said they came to see all the skeletons.”

After they trick or treated, kids rolled the orange globes down lanes that were created by bales of hay. They tried to knock down pins that were decorated to look like ghosts.

“The kids really got a kick out of that,” Cummings said.

Pumpkin bowling and the craft area were hosted by the Greater La Grange YMCA, Cummings said.
